Biota: The Biodiversity Database Manager

An important note about Biota4D (the client/server version of Biota) and 4D Server

Note: This information has no bearing on BiotaApp, the stand-alone version of Biota.

Biota4D Multiplatform, Version 1.x.x, requires 4D Server, Version 1.5.4, for client/server use (or 4th Dimension, Version 3.5.4 for single-user use).

As of August 31, 1999, ACIUS ceased marketing 4D Server 1.5.4 or 4th Dimension 3.5.4, since these products have now been superseded by 4D Server and 4th Dimension Version 6.x.x. (The version numbers skipped from 1/3 to 6 to coordinate with European version numbers.)

Biota4D Version 2 runs under 4D Server and 4th Dimension Version 6.8 (or later) (And BiotaApp Version 2 will be compiled with 4D Engine 6.8 (or later). Biota 2 is a major redevelopment effort, with a new interface and dozens of new features, including the option for an onboard Web server...yet your Biota 1.x Data Files will be 100% compatible with Biota 2. As of June, 2003, Biota 2 is in the final stages of beta testing, with an expected release in fall, 2003.

If you are considering moving to client/server use of Biota, and you do not already own 4D Server 1.5.4, you have two options.

You can join the Biota 2 beta project. If you plan to use Biota in a Client/Server (multi-user) environment, and you need to get started before Biota 2 is commercially released, please contact Robert Colwell to discuss joining the Biota 2 beta project. Several sites are already successfully using Biota4D Version 2 beta under 4D Server 6.8+.

You can use BiotaApp until Biota Version 2 is released, then move to Biota4D under 4D Server 6.8+.
